October 4, 2021In March 2020, Joshua Konkankoh, CEO of Better World Cameroon and African Way, was invited to lecture a class on the Master's program in Peace, Security and Development Studies at University of Coimbra.
The Seminar on Practices of Peace, Humanitarianism and Development that is held as part of the Master’s Degree on Peace, Security and Development Studies at the University of Coimbra, seeks to bring to the students a variety of voices who are working for peace, for humanitarian action and for international development cooperation.
Joshua Konkankoh's talk not only focused on the work done at Bafut Ecovillage, highlighting the positive role ecovillages can play in working for peace, community building and youth empowerment, but also had the central contribution of bringing to the community. Seminar students a non - Western and African voice highly committed to work for peace and sustainable development (in a non-Western framework).
The aim was to present students with so many perspectives and professional experiences as possible, so that they can personally know the many paths they can follow when trying to implement an agenda for peace, for humanitarianism and for development, Joshua Konkankoh's lecture was of fundamental importance for the academic path of the Master's students.
For this Master's students, who are learning about the international system and about the peace and dynamics of conflict around the world, it is extremely important to get in touch with people who do not come from the West. This allows them to connect with different perspectives, experiences, forms of communication and worldviews. Thus, Joshua Konkankoh's lecture allowed students to engage for a moment in a culture-to-culture dialogue that is increasingly important in a globalized world where the challenges of peace work, humanitarian action, development cooperation, community building, grassroots activism, youth empowerment and much more are all interlinked.
For those on the way to work in these areas, it is now more than ever necessary to understand the cultural diversity that must permeate these processes, and to promote these encounters and this mutual learning, so that we can all work in the same way. objectives without perpetuating the dominant paradigms brought about by the colonialist and capitalist systems created by the West.
